Steilerberg, officially the Principality of Steilerberg (Ree: Fürstentum Steilerberg) is a landlocked microstate located in southeast Uletha. It is a semi-constitutional monarchy, headed by the prince Matthäus III von Bruch.

Steilerberg is bordered only by Reeland, via the Vumrup river, which runs through the west of the country, and the Schlangenfelsen mountains on the east. It covers about 166 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest countries in the world. It owns two exclaves across the Vumrup river - Mittal and Reelantsdorf. The historical capital city is Zürnacht, located in the east, while the largest city is Elpück, located in the plains in the southwest.

Etymology

The name Steilerberg is derived from the words steil - meaning steep, and berg translating to mountain. It was named by the first prince of the nation, Prince Karl Büchberg in 1659, after the geography that surrounded his castle which he built in today's Zürnacht location.

History

Geography

The country can be divided into three parts, geographically speaking. The west, by the Vumrup river is dominated by flat plains which are suitable for agriculture. It's the region that hosts the majority of the population. The eastern half is dominated by steep and tall mountains, called the Schlangenfelsen. The tallest peak, the Grünspitze, with an elevation of 1,781 meters is located here. The southeast hosts primarily hills which are home to many pasture fields.

Administration

Steilerberg is divided into 4 municipalities called Teilung, and one special municipality (Spezialabteilung). Each of the municipalities hosts one of the 4 largest cities of Steilerberg. The one special municipality includes the two exclaves on the west side of the Vumrup.
