Tapi Ra (/to'pi re/), usually written Tąpi Rā or ތޮޕި ރެ in Taputi script, is a small island country in the Asperic Ocean on the east coast of Tarephia. It is densely populated with a unique language and strong indegenous (Tapitian) culture.

As an important trading post and with deposits of gold and platinum, the settlement endured as an independent city-state from the 12th century. It facilitated trade along the east coast of the Asperic and served as an minor trading centre.

History

In the early 1740s, a council of islanders negotiated trade settlements with various powers, which maintained the independece of the islands. They moved to an early form of democracy, with the first Jhapita (parliament) being formally constituted in 1789.

The high peaks and rugged terrain contributed to the defensible nature of the settlement. This, along with astute decisions on military resourcing, ensured the islands' independence until the 19th century.

The island is officially a monarchy but this has an unuique form. Kings of Tapi Ra are elected annually but this is ceremonial position. The island remained neutral in all 20th century conflicts.

Economy

The island's economy is dominated by the tourism sector, with insurance, banking and finance a major component. Manufacturing, including heavy industy (especially aluminium and other smelting) remain significant.

The industrial sector is strongly syndicated. The island has a mean GDP per capita of $80,333, one of the highest in the world, and this is distributed fairly equitably within the population. The countriy's HDI in 2019 was 0.971.

The endemic Tąpi Rā Brown butterfly Bicyclus tapi-raa.The patterns on the wings are thought to reflect the shape of the islands.
An endemic Tąpi Rā absinthe tree Dendrosicyos absinthica. Mature specimens are now very rare.
