Usage

{{Infobox former country}} may be used for describing information about a former country or former entity. It has more functions detailed as historical aspects of a country, contrary to {{Infobox country}}, which primarily focuses on existing countries. Keep in mind it does not replace {{Infobox country}}, and should only be used for countries or entities that do NOT EXIST ANYMORE.

Syntax

The infobox should be added as shown below:

{{Infobox former country
|native_name = <!-- Name in a modern syntax of native language(s). Leave blank if name is only in Ingerish.
Separate with line breaks<br/> If language uses Romantic characters, place name(s) in italics. -->

Parameters

Name and introduction

  • native_name: street name to be displayed. This field should only be entered when the name is different from general Ingerish.
  • conventional_long_name: full official name in Ingerish.
  • common_name: short name of country in Ingerish. Will not be displayed, but is used for the construction of links (and categories in a later stage).
  • continent: name of the continent the entity is on. Is not displayed in the infobox, but used as meta information and future purposes.
  • region: name of the region the entity is located in. Will be used for future purposes.
  • era: for specific eras in time that are well known in the world. Will display "Historical era" instead of the History header. May be used for categories in the future.
  • status: the status of the country. Works in combination with empire. Please read the table down below for combinations and how to enter correctly.
  • status_text: overrides status parameter, use very sparingly!
  • empire: the empire the country or entity was a part of, like "Ingerland" or "Castellán". Works in combination with status. Please read the table down below for combinations and how to enter correctly.

Events (rise & fall, etc.)

  • event_start: name of the event that created the entity. By default set to Established
  • date_start: date of establishment. This field is optional, do not input year!
  • year_start: year of establishment. This field is required.
  • event_end: name of the event that ended the entity. By default set to Disestablished
  • date_end: date of disestablishment. This field is optional, do not input year!
  • year_end: year of disestablishment. This field is required.
  • year_exile_start: year of start of exile. Use when entity has exiled government. If so, also set status="exile"
  • year_exile_end: year of end of exile. This field is required.
  • event1 - event5: other important events between "start" and "end".
  • date_event1 - date_event5: corresponding dates of the above events.
  • event_pre: crucial event that took place before "event_start". This field is optional.
  • date_pre:
  • event_post: crucial event that took place after "event_end". This field is optional.
  • date_post:

Flag navigation (preceding and succeeding entities)

  • p1-p5: name of the article for the preceding entity. DO NOT INPUT COUNTRY TEMPLATE! There are 15 parameters available for both preceding and succeeding entities.
  • flag_p1 - flag_p5: flag file of the preceding entities, corresponding to the above names.
  • border_p1 - border_p5: when "no", it will remove the border from the flag. This is useful for flags with a different shape then rectangular, for others the use of this parameter is discouraged.
  • image_p1 - flag_p5: image file of the preceding entities, corresponding to the above names. In earlier times, images like coats of arms were more common than flags. This parameter overrides the flag parameters.
  • s1-s5: name of the article for the succeeding entity. DO NOT INPUT COUNTRY TEMPLATE! There are 15 parameters available for both preceding and succeeding entities.
  • flag_s1 - flag_s5: flag file of the succeeding entities, corresponding to the above names.
  • border_s1 - border_s5: when "no", it will remove the border from the flag. This is useful for flags with a different shape then rectangular, for others the use of this parameter is discouraged.
  • image_s1 - flag_s5: image file of the succeeding entities, corresponding to the above names. In earlier times, images like coats of arms were more common than flags. This parameter overrides the flag parameters.
IMPORTANT

To which entries should I link?
It is not the intention here to list every single previous/following entity—that would make the infobox look very silly in many cases. Here are some guidelines for what to do (and what not to do). There are no strict rules so please exercise caution and common sense when using this feature.

  1. For most cases, the main and/or official predecessor/successor (under international law) is sufficient, since that is what most readers would expect to see. In the case of any potential confusion, list only this.
  2. In some cases, most readers would expect to see every state that was formed, not just the official predecessor/successor. If so, list all states. If only parts of other countries were taken to form the new entity (or if an already existing entity received some of the land from a dissolved entity), list these states only when there are not so many other states to list.
  3. Do not list entities that were formed/dissolved outside the life-span of the discussed state.
  4. If an entity simply became a subdivision of another country (state, province, etc.), then link to that subdivision. Only do this if it the transition is very clear.
  5. If the entity did not exist for a period before reforming (specified when you use the life_span parameter above), do not list the intermediate states.
  6. If the predecessor and successor are the same, and this predecessor/successor continued to exist during this period, do not list either. Instead, make it clear what this state was somewhere in the events section (if necessary).

For examples, see this page.

Politics

  • government_type: type of government, like "Constitutional monarchy" or "Dictatorship". Type required, otherwise enter Unknown. Generates categories.

Head of state

  • title_leader: the head of state's title. If government_type=Monarchy, by default this would be King. If government_type=Republic, the default is President. When a different name is used, enter it here.
  • leader1, leader2, ...: name of the leader. Wikilinks are generated automatically, but you should create wikilinked entries for people whose entry title is long.
  • year_leader1, year_leader2, ...: dates spanning rule of leader (e.g. 1801–1843).

Colonial governor, representative of head of state, etc.

  • title_representative: same as for the head of state. These fields are to be used for colonial governors, representatives of the head of state, etc. For heads of government (e.g. Prime Minister), use the "deputy" field below.
  • representative1, representative2, ...: representative name. Wikilinks are generated automatically, but you should create wikilinked entries for people whose entry title is long.
  • year_representative1, year_representative2, ...: dates spanning rule of representative (e.g. 1801–1843).

Deputy, head of government, etc.

  • title_deputy: same as for the head of state. The only difference here is the default labels given: instead of "King" the default here is "Prime Minister".
  • deputy1, deputy2, ...: deputy name. Wikilinks are generated automatically, but you should create wikilinked entries for people whose entry title is long.
  • year_deputy1, year_deputy2, ...: dates spanning rule of deputy (e.g. 1801–1843).

Legislatures

  • legislature: the name of the legislature (required to display upper and lower hoses).
  • house1, house2: the names of upper and lower houses of the legislature.
  • type_house1, type_house2: ability to enter different labels than upper and lower houses.

Area and population

  • stat_year1, stat_year2 ...: years corresponding to the entered data in the following parameters.
  • stat_area1, stat_area2 ...: area values corresponding to the entered data in the year parameters. Enter values in km2.
  • stat_pop1, stat_pop2 ...: population corresponding to the entered data in the year parameters. Don't use spaces or seperations.
IMPORTANT

It is possible to add multiple values for area and population over time.

  • Area must be given in km² without commas or any other spacing. The area in sq.mi. will be automatically calculated
  • Population must be given without commas or any other spacing. If area is also known for this time, population density will be automatically calculated.
  • Even if the area does not change over time, it should always be added along with any new population values in order to calculate density.
    • Example: You have population values for 1800 and 1900. You also have an area value and you know that it is the same for both years. You enter "stat_year1=1800" and "stat_year2=1900" and the two population values (without commas or spacing) under "stat_pop1" and "stat_pop2". You then enter your area value (in km², without commas or spacing) in both "stat_area1" and "stat_area2". The area will not be displayed twice, but the population density will be calculated for both years.
  • today: Present-day countries that overlap with the territorial extent of the former country. It is recommended that this parameter be avoided if there are more than four such countries.

Footnotes

  • footnotes: a standard field for footnotes. Use footnotes if there is anything in the infobox that requires further explanation. Supports wikilinks..
  • footnotes2: a second field for footnotes, separated from the first. Supports wikilinks.
  • footnote_a, footnote_b, ..., footnote_h: Fields for footnotes identified using lowercase letters "a" to "h" (Examplea). All support wikilinks.

Status and empire

The status and empire fields are fields that are extremely sensitive to the information that is entered there. Possible entries are:

  • status= Empire, Federation, Confederation, State union, Special territory, Unrecognized state, City-state, Commonwealth realm, Mandate, Assembly of Nations Territory, Protectorate, Client state, Puppet state, Vassal, Fief, Abbey, Satellite state, Colony, Provisional government, Exiled government
  • empire= Ingerland, Pretany, Castellán, Neo Delta, etc...

Some statuses (the first ones in the list) will not be displayed, since they are not adding much information. In the case there is no government_type entered, these statuses actually will show up, to display a "political structure" field, to give at least some general information. In the future, this might be subject to change. For now, it's best to enter everything you can. Futhermore, don't fill in the empire field when status is empire, federation, special territory or anything. For now, this will create an empty cell.

In some exceptional cases when these two fields don't create a reasonable description, |status_text=* overrides the regular description with an own description. This should be used extremely sparingly!
