Topahappan is a city in the north of Latina. The town is the capital of the province Mil Ojes of Latina and has 867 309 inhabitants (zensus 2011).

The Flag shows the upgoing sun over a lake, the wood in the background. So the flag symbolisized the name of the town, in indigen latinian language "wood at the lake". The indigenes with this mean only a common situation, not a special place. But the town has taken this common word as the name. Topohappan is one of the few towns in Latina with an indigen name. Til today 12 % of the inhabitants of Topahappan have indigen roots.

History

Til the battle of Topohappan in the year 1821 this area was the land of indigen tribes. Topohappan was founded 1823 as fort against the indigene tribes, which may come back in theyr lost land. First settlement was the small part of Barrio # 1 between the lake and the town-ditch.

The town begun to grow, as the railway to Van Pelt City was build in the 1850-ies and is since then a knotpoint of transportation. First here the steam-railways had her last great service-station before the way over the Elk Pass, to go over the Sierra Grande and then to the eastcoast to the harbour of Van Pelt.

The first settlement are the barrios ## 1, 2 and 3 between the lake and the railway. 1870 the urbanisation grow more to the west and east and to the southern shore of the lake. An island in this urbanisized area is the battlefield of 1821. 1870 the botanical garden was founded at an wooden hill north of the railway station.

1890 beginning the barrios of the railway are constructed as an area of better level. Here are build so called "family-houses". That means small houses in a row along the streets, 16 to 20 m broad and one beneath the next with the ground floor for living and a first floor for the sleeping-rooms. Behind the houses lays a garden. More as on other towns in Latina in Topahappan such style of urbanisation is set over great areas.

In the 1930ies as in other cities of Latina under president Carlos Sapenas the Ciudad Lineal (now barrio # 7) was founded with smaller and cheaper flats and "family-houses" for workers.

The heart of the city today is the "Corso" at the northside of the lake and from there the great roads to the north. Urban life too is in the university-quarter in the barrios ## 2, 9 and 10.
